Trinidad and Tobago Carnival
Of the many Carnivals around the Caribbean Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is probably the best. And if you are looking for the wildest and extravagant parties, this year, you need to find your way to Trinidad and Tobago. The tradition of Carnival is wide spread around the world and is primarily centered around the build up to Ash Wednesday and the celebration of Lent. The culmination of all of the celebrations is always Fat Tuesday and always ends at midnight, so the good Christians can then spend the next 40 days getting good with their maker before Easter. The Carnival celebration that most Americans are familiar with is New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and like all carnival celebrations in this hemisphere it’s roots go way back in the slave tradition. Trinidad and Tobago has as wide an ethnic diversity as any place, so the sights and sounds are over the top.
Music befitting the party
Since Trinidad and Tobago is the home of Calypso music, it stands to reason the vibrant tones of this tropical standard echo the streets of the whole country. While calypso has been around for centuries, in recent decades the sound of Soca has muscled it’s way to join Calypso in the spot light and when mixed with the ever present steel drums… well, your ears will be awash in this amazing sound smorgasbord. As if the musical orgy wasn’t enough, your eyes will behold sights that might make you think you were on acid or otherwise losing your mind. The sheer number of people on the street wearing insanely over the top costumes and acting out many characters of local tradition it is impossible not to get carried away with it all.
